Philippians 4: 6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with Thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
It is normal to be anxious or to worry when faced with a challenging situation or a circumstance or crisis, especially a difficult one, for that matter.
I worry a lot, especially when things don’t seem to work out as I had planned. I believe you also worry about your situations or prevailing circumstance gets out of control. Everyone worries because of one thing here and another situation there. So, trust me, you aren’t the only one riding on that boat called anxiety.
Now, form the passage above, we understand that Paul was always under challenging circumstances throughout his entire life in God’s ministry, he was persecuted, arrested, flogged, slept hungry, sick and so on.
But astonishingly Paul was never worried or anxious. He(Paul) tells us, “Do not be anxious,” not only anxious but anxious about anything. That is quite a tough and overwhelming challenge, right? But guess what this ultimate challenge comes packed with a fulfilled promise from God.
What’s the promise? You ask.
Well, let’s read the 7th verse of that exciting chapter Philippians 4. Paul tells us, “And the PEACE OF GOD. Let’s stop there for a minute. I need you to understand this, “The peace of God” and not our own peace, not your parent’s peace, not the peace you get from your concerned friends and relatives, not the kind of peace you wish for from your supervisor or boss, not that kind of peace you derive from listening to soft and soothing music, or that you get when your next-door neighbor’s dog decides to stop howling and keep quiet for the rest of the night, not the kind of peace you get after swallowing almost a dozen pills of strong and recommended pain killers or anti-depressants.
The kind of peace that I am looking for here is that which comes from God. That which comes from the only one who can count the number of hair on your head, the one who gives you the pleasure of breathing, moving, and doing all things freely, at no cost. The peace that’s from the only one who knows how your tomorrow will be, the one who graces us in everything that we do. Isn’t that cool?
This PEACE FROM GOD, is unimaginable and incredible, why? Because it surpasses (is more than, exceeds, extra, overpowers, overtakes, is superior to) all understanding. Yes! That peace is excellent to what we understand about worldly peace. You will not see that peace physically, but one thing am sure of is that you will feel its effects, it is an experience to die for, my friend because that peace will make you sleep soundly in the middle of a storm, not being scared by the tides and waves that beat harshly on your boat. This peace does one profound thing in you; it guards or protects your heart from panic attacks, and blocks your minds from random thoughts. And it does this through CHRIST JESUS, what this statement means is, this peace comes through Jesus, Jesus is the sole distributor or dealer of this priceless merchandise (God’s peace).He (Jesus gives this peace in his unique way and not as the world gives peace. By the way, you cannot provide what isn’t yours, let me put it this way you cannot give what you don’t have. The world has no peace, so the world cannot provide you with peace. In John 14: 27, Jesus informs us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. And I do not give to you as the world gives…so don’t be afraid”. So, you can see peace belongs to Jesus.
What are you supposed to do instead of worrying?
Well, it’s not as easy as 1-2-3, but you can do it, Yes you can if you follow Paul’s advice. Now, Paul points to us the directions to follow so that we can get to have and enjoy this peace from its only dispenser(Lord Jesus Christ).
Paul, out of vast knowledge and experience, tells us not to be anxious, and he(Paul) generously informs us what to do instead. He says… but in prayer and supplication, with Thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6). So, It’s important to us that the key to having that God-given peace is Prayer and Supplication.
In the prayer, you are required to, make your requests, or wishes or heart desires be made known to God. But I want you to get this other point; Thanksgiving MUST accompany the demands you are preparing to God. Yes, Thanksgiving must be an ingredient in the menu you are presenting to God.
God delights in us thanking Him, as seen in 1Thessalonians 5: 17,18, which says 17. pray continually,18. Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Trust me, A prayer marinated and garnished with Thanksgiving will please God’s taste and he will reward you with His Peace.

Dear Heavenly Father, we worship you this evening for you are God. We come before you, Father thanking you because of your word on anxiety and how to overcome it, Lord. We ask you, Father, to teach us to see the good in every bad. Teach us how to trust you and trust your promises. Thanks for the life you’ve given to us freely. We are not asking you for anything, but we are thanking you for all and in all, and we are resting sure that you will bless us and grace each of our endeavors. We pray this believing and trusting in you’re the power of your Name, Jesus. Amen.
