Research Concept Paper
Despite the significant strides made in advancing the medical arena, the world has continued to witness fatalities due to some infections. Ranging from the common mild diseases to some of the severe pandemics, all these are claiming lots of human lives. All what a vast majority of medical practitioners are opting for is just containment. In fact, some containment techniques are reported to have led into full recovery of the patients. Some of the common dreadful diseases arise from lifestyle behavior. An example of these is cancer. There exists various forms of this disease. No matter the type of cancer, the reality dawning many is that this disease is dangerous.
Justification of the study
Just after any person is diagnosed with cancer, the first image that crosses one’s mind is the aspect of life coming to an end. However, this varies with the person in question. Strong-willed people usually overcome such condition with ease than their weaker counterparts. In addition to this, the immunity levels of the infected contributes greatly to either deterioration or fast recovery from this disease. In the current medical sphere, both physical and emotional effects are what is reported as the immediate effect of cancer disease. Some medical scholars suggest that most death cases are as a result of shock after declaration of positive cancer case. With these being the common outcomes in many countries, this field has made some tremendous steps in devising various techniques to deliver any positive cancer results to a patient.
In arresting some of the emerging cancer patient needs, there has been an establishment of various medical departments involving services of nurse navigator. These are health professionals whose role is to ensure quick recovery of cancer patients. There are several roles executed by this cadre of people. First, they are trained to an extend that they can assess and identify any cancer symptoms in any given patient. They can then report on what treatment should be administered to that patient in making the patient meet their healthcare needs. In addition to that role, these nurses provide cancer patients with intensive advice and education on the various ways of avoiding any likely cancer-causing conditions. For those patients who are tested and depict no signs of cancer, education is also offered on what to avoid and what to keep doing in a bid towards reducing any possible causes of cancer (Major et al, 2016). Despite all these services which are usually cheaply accessible, some cancer patients find it better not to seek these. They are considered to prefer swallowing the bitter truth of the situation.
There are various reasons why there is always a continued existence of these two categories of cancer patients. First, the prevailing conditions of the economic gains can render such situations. Those people with better incomes are mostly reported to receive such nurse navigating services. Another issue is the aspect of choice. There are various believes that some of those nurse navigator care givers are not usually genuine enough. For some patients, they value confidentiality than any other thing in life. For this reason, they end up keeping their health conditions to themselves. As a result, they are much more satisfied provided they keep on receiving cancer treatment from the other cadre of health professionals (Pisarska et al, 2016). In actual sense, the degree of fulfilment from these health care services depends on how close one is to the nurse navigator. For instance, if the victim has had any conflict related situation with the nurse navigator, then that person would prefer receiving the usual treatment only. The resulting preferable method then depends on the patient and nurse navigator relationship and previous encounters.
A number of measures have been put in place to encourage people to consider getting the services of these nurse navigators. Some include assigning a nurse to a patient with which they have had no previous encounters. This is a technique bearing fruitful health outcomes on cancer treatment. Other methods include continued awareness creation on the importance of these nurse navigator services. However, apart from these moves, there is a worrying trend in adversities on fatality cases both for those receiving nurse navigator services and those not getting these services. This has ignited the research front into investigating the likely causes for this scenario. One cause of this is the lack of adequate funding on the two aspects. The other likely cause for this is the presence of unskilled nursing fraternity. Lastly under consideration is the realm of awareness creation on the importance of cancer counselling (Tariman & Szubski, 2015). This, then, informs our research questions. The first research question becomes: does lack of sufficient funding contribute to information deficiency between those receiving nurse navigator services and those not receiving such services? Next, the second research question would be: does the presence of unskilled nurses affect the health outcomes of cancer patients on the two fronts? The last research question would be: does awareness creation affect the outcome of cancer patients in the two spheres?
Review of literature
With this study topic being not new to many scholars, it would be prudent to visit the various information contained in the previously done studies on the same. This is more likely to give more insights on the gaps identified and how far the previous proposals have been executed. One of the research works include that of diverticulitis with the cost aspect captured. This is a study done by Rezapour and colleagues in the year 2018. They considered the estimates of the amount spent by the United States of America in treatment of cancer. 200000 is the number quoted reflecting the total admissions of cancer victims into the various medical facilities. This figure caused the country to spent a total of $2.2 billion on treatment of this disease just within a single year (Rezapour, Ali & Stollman, 2018). All this is an amount which could have been directed into other income generating activities. All these cases are believed to have resulted from the relaxed nature of nursing services. The few nurses were stretched beyond their capacity. in return, some of these patients are claimed not to have received the best of care. This was information regarding what the country faced in the year 2012.
With prevention being always the best approach to some of the chronic diseases, the country devised some great techniques in managing this serious health threat. The government developed a model of rolling out these nurse navigating activities. In line with this initiative, Pedrazzani and colleagues conducted a study on the best strategy for speeding recovery after surgery. This is a model which was adopted by the government in controlling some of the resulting post-surgery diseases. Some of such conditions associated with surgery include stress and homeostasis imbalance. The basis concept behind the development and implementation of nurse navigator practices has been the post-surgery model (Sarin et al, 2016). This model outlines what these nurses should do in helping these victims. With such increased cancer cases in the U.S, this technique came in handy in containing this worrying health scenario.
In 2015, a study by Pędziwiatr and colleagues was conducted. This was somehow related to the post-surgery study but more elaborate. This is because, in this case, these researchers concentrated on grouping the various patients into cohort categories. They considered the rate of patient admissions into hospitals based on three groups. The first group was considered as the one which did not strictly follow the laid down health protocol. The second one is that which followed the guidelines but leaving some aspects unaddressed. The last category was that which adhered strictly to the laid down directives. This was a study mostly leaned on awareness creation. Such a conclusion can be deduced from the nature in which these three classifications were arrived at (Seldon et al, 2016). They were ordered according to the degree of popularity of the initiative with the third one being the most aware. Notably, all this research was not done with the disease like cancer in question. However, it turns out that the model is most applicable on aspects of nurse navigation geared towards eradicating cancer out of the world.
Research summary and conclusion
With the current preliminary findings, it is clear that a good range of aspects distinguish the two highlighted realms. First, with the kind of government expenditure recorded in 2012, it is profound that a better decision likely to yield the desired health outcomes was the preferred gesture. The high number of people admitted for medication shows that self-treatment was not effective enough. These people opted to seek health services with believably clear conscience that they would encounter some of these nurse navigator activities. If the usual treatment was effective, they would have been reported seeking post disease checkup. This is the only point where nursing activities would be needed in less urgency. Those huge volumes of costs incurred is also an indication that the burden associated with treating diseases is undesired. There have not been any reports on those cases where one had been receiving nurse navigator services. This just shows how important this could be.
With the steps taken by the government, it narrows down to one conclusive item. After a consultative analysis, it is when the government can adopt a recommendation. The post-surgery condition is an example of some of the measures initiated by the government. This technique encompassed counselling the various victims to ensure that full recovery is attained. Cancer disease is not an exemption on this. With the kind of agony that cancer patients go through, this approach is considered one of the best. In some societal settings, cancer patients are faced with some stigmatization in trying to mingle back with other members of the society. With some of these nurse navigators tasked with the role of educating these societies, it serves well in enabling these patients get back to their previously occupied roles with ease. Those patients not attached to services of these nurse navigators might find it difficulty getting acceptance (Pędziwiatr, et al, 2018). All these show that the overall view is that those cancer patients using nurse navigators realize better outcomes than those not using nurse navigators.
Healthy living is a critical element for the realization of any person’s lasting life. In order to make this a reality, people are advised to avoid taking in any kinds of food likely to endanger their future life expectancy. With cancer commonly associated with the lifestyle of an individual, its presence can be eradicated through good and highly cautious life. This can be done in such a way that chances of its occurrence are minimized by the largest margin possible.
