Shelley, in this Novel, modifies a monster into an eloquent creature rather than uncommunicative or mute as many expected. The monster at first was as big as an adult man being but much ignorant like a newborn. It could not speak, read or understand the importance of human coexistence and interactions(Allen, 2008).He started picking up their language after stumbling upon the cottagers and went ahead to studying and mastering their speech. This affirmed to Shelley that the monster had the potential of more of a human being because the rate at which he absorbed information with was unmatched. He took less time to capture many concepts and comprehend easily. After interaction and study of the speech of the cottagers, the monster developed eloquence which turns the perception of people towards it from a mysterious nightmare to a tragic and sympathetic figure that could understand human emotions and feelings. The behaviour of the monster after the acquisition of language formed the basis of Shelley’s argument that the only promising way that can make people trust and understand one another truly is through effective verbal communication(Michaud, 2013).This argument was contrary to the initial perception of people who believed that the development of mutual understanding depends on the appearance or actions of others.
Prior to expressing himself, the actions of this monster were much terrifying. From his previous history after escaping from Victor’s workshop and murder of William, people confirmed that this monster was very powerful and is capable of causing violence wherever it goes without any external motivation to do so.People believed that its desire to be violent comes from inner motives, and it was uncompromising. The beliefs of people seemed convincing since the physical appearances of this monster were different from those of a sober human being, and it instilled fear to whoever interacted with him.Shelley tries to manipulate people to join her and Victor in their assumption that despite this monster having yellow skin, the body that was patched together and black lips, its soul resembles that of a normal human being(Michaud, 2013).
When the monster got time to express himself, he explained how desertions of Victor left him frightened and alone. He wanted people to understand how he was hurt when he noticed that ordinary people were being scared by his physical appearance. The stories that he narrated about sympathizing and helping the cottagers secretly affirmed to people that this creature was empathetic(Allen,2008).This expression marked the turning point of people’s perception towards this creature as a violent and malignant beast to a monster who can reason logically as humans do.The monster went ahead on explaining how he rescued a young girl by receiving a bullet that was aimed at the girl. This scenario indicated that this monster had a heart of helping human beings who were weaker than himself. These encounters lead to the conclusion that Victor was responsible for the violent behaviour of this monster. Shelley gave this monster the oratory’s power in order to force people to change their earlier perception of this creature from being prone to frequent violence and begin to sympathize with his plight.
Shelley managed to capture the attention of people which consequently manipulated them to develop sympathy towards the monster by comparing his words to those of Victor(Michaud, 2013).
.Victor had a lot of chances of arguing his case to people and cast himself as a hero, but this didn’t happen. His words kept on alienating people whenever he attempted to put himself on the right side. When the monster escaped, he felt insecure because he knew that all the truth would unfold to the people about his real character and the mistreatments that he did to the monster. He also contributed to the death of Justine since he knew that she would disclose the truth and damage his reputation to people. He heartlessly scorns and abandons his creation to suffer rather than fighting for its well-being.Victor would have won the attention of people and become more appealing if he could lose his power of speech because his actions and behaviour seemed much reasonable (Habibi, 2012). But through communication; he bares his soul verbally which revealed the unappealing motives which operated behind his reasonable behaviours and action, and consequently lost sympathy and trust from the readers.
The eloquent words of the monster did not possess the effects that he intended, but verbal communication of victor enabled the monster to gain the favour of the readers, and he emerges to be the hero in Frankenstein’s narrative. This way, Shelley was able to demonstrate the vital importance of language in developing human relations as well as perception by others
