Upbringing children is one of the noblest duties bestowed to every parent, and many parents wonder if the energy, time, and resources they have put in raising their children are enough. Unfortunately, only parents who live to see their children as adults can access their parenting skills since the fruits of their labor are manifest from these young adults’ level of productivity in society. In amidst the parenting task, parents put much effort into ensuring that they leave an inheritance to their children.
So let us understand the term inheritance before deciding which ones would benefit your child’s present and future life. Inheritance is the act of a person transferring property to another through succession or hereditary—the practice dates among the Jews during the Old Testament times of the Bible. Inheritance to male children and brothers of the man in cases where he had no sons were patrilineal. Before my kin embraced civilization, only the male children had a birthright.
However, today modernization has allowed female children to be heirs to their parents’ property. Today, people document inheritance rights in a will. Moreover, giving inheritance is no longer limited to family members.
So, which is the best gift to give your children as an inheritance? In answering that question, I would like to state that inheritance does not have to be physical. Physical goods like property or money go a long way in helping your child base when starting a business or career. However, there exist more valuable assets.
Wise men will tell you that money or property does not give a man fulfillment. Their counsel would meet that your child needs education and discipline more than anything to survive and succeed in the present times.
You may wonder, “Which parent doesn’t understand that education is a basic need in this era”? Before you go ahead of yourself, understand this definition of education. The word education refers to the wholesome development of a child in physical, mental, and spiritual capabilities to prepare them to enjoy life and offer service in this life and the life to come. Therefore, education goes beyond taking a child to school to master concepts and apply them in life.
Wholesome education calls for the participation of both the school, parents, and society in actively training a child to develop all spheres of life. Enrolling your child to study the British Education Curriculum and taking music and art classes not available in public schools does not qualify for a complete education. Neither does it have to do with how eloquent your child speaks English and other foreign languages that are foreign to other average children of his age.
A majority of schools offer physical, practical, and intellectual developments but ignore the spiritual development aspect. The freedom to religion and availability of various religious beliefs may be the reason for such reluctance, but parents and society should play a role in pointing children to their creator. For such, it will lead to a modest character and spirit, preparing a child for life here on earth and future life.
Why is child chastisement no longer communal? Today when I see your child from Group of schools behaving poorly in public, I cannot question or offer guidance because I did not bare him, so I have no right to rebuke and instruct. This kind of education fails in developing a child’s full capacities.
Presently, studies show that physical activity is important to students for the increment of neurotrophins, leading to the survival of neurons responsible for memory, concentration, learning, and thinking. Consequently, children should participate in various physical activities beyond sports. Homes provide an excellent environment for children to engage in physical activity by doing house chores, participating in voluntary work, and playing outdoor games with neighbors.
The majority of parents are beneficiaries of consistent handiwork. Why do parents deny your children this prestigious opportunity to learn practical life skills? In a country where employment opportunities are few, the masses would benefit if they consider undertaking hand jobs. However, where would they gain such skills if there is no provision to learn, master, and appreciate these kinds of jobs? For example, a youth who has never held a needle and thread to fix a patch in his clothing would not have the passion for being a tailor. Likewise, a student who has never watered or planted kale even in a container would have little interest in agriculture.
The introduction of a new syllabus for Primary Schools led to varied responses from the public who did not understand its content. I know little about the changes, but the practical home assignments that the pupils undertake are awesome. Over the weekend, a parent monitored her son engage in a practical lesson washing plate as she took photos that she would print and would submit to his teacher for assessment. From my evaluation, it was the first time this child was performing such a chore.
But I was happy with the lessons that such course work would instill in pupils and help change the negative mentality that such jobs are for people with no education. No wonder people despise men and women who help us put our homes in order.
Secondly, I would like to suggest as equally paramount as education, and one that parents should invest in is discipline. From the Bible, God instructs parents to discipline their children, for it would bring them peace and delights that their parents desire. For what reason would parents dishonor such instruction, which would bring them delight and contend with worldly counsel.
There were celebrations among pupils and parents when the Government of Kenya banned canning students. Whereas students’ reason for celebrations was escaping the painful strokes from the teachers, guardians were happy that their children were safe from the teachers’ brutal hands.
Unfortunately, parents sometimes feel that they are the only people who can discipline their children. When no one asks crucial questions such as what alternative and effective methods of punishment would replace canning, and if the ban was a good or bad move, the objective of such an implementation fails. It does not benefit copying the western culture without assessing it’s practicality in our education system. Consequently, schools and society suffer the folly of undisciplined.
Humans acquire discipline through self-denial, learning, and submission to authority. Back in high school, I remember schoolgirls who were academically weak but had good behavior, and how their counterparts who were better performers had the belief that their future would be fairer than theirs. Fortunately, teachers’ had a kind heart towards students who we disciplined irrespective of their poor performance. Those once branded incapable are presently managers and employers to students who were exemplary performers.
You may ask, ‘why’? The answer is simple, discipline opens doors that degrees cannot open since the character primarily define people and not the concepts one master. A person who possesses noble demeanor is acceptable to a multitude of people, works without supervision, and remain genuine in his dealings. Discipline not only surpass high grades but, when accompanied by handiwork, I cannot fathom what is not achievable to such an individual.
Let us reflect on how handiwork and discipline were significant in ancient times when our forefathers who did not receive any formal education were wealthy and lived respectable lives. Inasmuch as they had informal education, they constituted laws as a culture to direct them and these the learned presently recommend as the best ways of living. Therefore, it not a surprise that our grandparents’ lives were more fruitful and gratifying, whereas a few lazy and undisciplined members of the community perished in poverty.
Conclusively, handiwork and discipline are superior to anything a parent would give a child.
Guardians, it is your duty to discipline your children and teach them manual labor hence opening doors of success and wealth, leading to the ideal life every parent would dream for his offspring. Remember the saying, “it is better to teach a man how to fish than to give him fish”. Take action and change your child’s destiny.
