  Origin of Evil

God is good, and all that he has made is good. But, even with all his goodness there is still a corrupt and sinful nature in the world. All this came about because of Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden. It is easy to recognize that this is the origin of sin, and because of this act, the entire human race has fallen into the same sinful lifestyle. Even though we can trace the original sin, it is not easy to put the finger at a particular person or being to blame the origin of evil into the world. The origin of evil is the first domino in the sinful domino effect. But where did this come from? Who is to blame? Did God originate evil in the world? Did Adam and Eve first have an evil heart before they took of the fruit? Or did it all fall upon God’s mightiest angel? It is within these three people that the origin of sin could have possibly have come.

            God is the creator of all, but does that mean that he could have created evil as well? This question is similar to a question I heard as a young child, “Can God make a rock that he cannot pick up?” Both of these questions puts God into a box, but in order to bypass any more theological debate, I will end by saying God can do all, but has also placed limits within himself. By understanding this concept it is safe to say that God did install evil into the world. After every single creation in the Bible, the bible says “…and it was good.” From common knowledge everyone knows that good is the complete opposite of evil, and good and evil have nothing in common with each other?  II Corinthians 6:14 says, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” According to John MacArthur, Jr he states, “God is not the author of evil. If God created evil, then God would be both good and evil. And if God were both good and evil, there would be no hope for the ultimate triumph of good, which the Bible promises. If God were himself evil, he could not, therefore, triumph over evil, so good could not triumph. If God were the source of evil, he would have to be evil himself. And if He were evil himself, then there could be no basis for salvation, for God could not save us from evil if evil was in His nature. So the Biblical revelation of the original goodness of creation protects the goodness of God. And it makes the source of evil outside of God.” Yes, God did make everything good, but he did give everything a free spirit, so that then places the blame either on Man or Lucifer.

            Is the fall of man the beginning of all evil? Did this eternal choice result from Adam and Eve having an evil spirit about them, which in the end cause them to sin? Man was created in the latter half of the week during creation, but at the time of their creation they were created as good, and there is no set time period between their creations to their fall, so it is easy to state that they were good throughout this time. Even though humans today are born with an evil nature this was not the case with Adam and Eve. They were created perfect humans with a sinless nature. “Everything God had created is said to be “very good.” The angels (“the host of heaven”) are in existence, but none of the angels has yet fallen. Man, nature and God are in perfect harmony. No sin, no death.” (Stedman). Although man is the first one to sin, he was not the origin of evil. The time between Adam’s creation and his fall he lived in a period of perfect sinless life. After the sin was when evil was introduced into the human race, but evil was already present in Satan after he deceived Adam and Eve.

            The angel Lucifer was God’s top angel. He was the most beautiful and powerful thing God had created. It is this that drives him to the first ever evil act to be done “Lucifer might have remained in favor with God, beloved and honored by all the angelic host, exercising his noble powers to bless others and to glorify his Maker. But, says the prophet, “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness.” Ezekiel 28:12-15, 17. Little by little, Lucifer came to indulge a desire for self-exaltation. Instead of seeking to make God supreme in the affections and allegiance of his creatures, it was Lucifer’s endeavor to win their service and homage to himself” (White). It is this act of self-desire that causes Lucifer to fall from heaven, and this act happened after God created everything, but before Adam and Eve’s fall.  It is his act of rebellion that drives humans today. “Satan has continued with men the same policy which he pursued with the angels. His spirit now reigns in the children of disobedience.”(White, E.G.)
