A list of Oliver’s Essay on Blindness paper

Oliver’s Essay on Blindness

The English surgeon William Cheselden removed cataracts from the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy in 1728. The boy’s visual perception had been hampered in his life entirely, subjecting him to profound difficulties. After Operation, he had to go through adjustments from blindness to sightedness. Such are the problems/ suffering that have been captured in Oliver’s Essay on Blindness that has its basis on Oklahoman Virgil. Virgil got his vision at age of 50, after nearly 40years of blindness.
The lack of will exhibited by doctors who had been approached to operate on him dealt him a mental blow, retiring him to the belief that his condition was not treatable. Hence, he was reluctant when Amy brought up the subject again.
When blind, Virgil had learned to recognize virtually everything that he interacted with. He lost that ability after being operated on and had to learn anew the process of recognition and conception of images. His ability to decipher words when reading started from the basics as he could only put up letters, but not the words in the entirety

Hemingway’s Indian Camp

In the Indian camp written by Hemingway, the suffering of the Indians is portrayed out loudly. The Indian camp, so isolated an island, has no access to medical facilities and resources, or even transport. The Indian boy Nick, have to row to access the Indian camp.
The pregnant lady has problems with delivery and not even the Indian midwives can be of assist to her. Life is lost because there is no access to a hospital and medical facilities. There’s also a man who had accidentally chopped his leg with an axe and has a terrible injury and has been untreated for three days and suffers the risk of other infections.

Morality of Killing

Maus by Spielgelman

In recapturing the German Holocaust, Maus was written by Spiegelman to elaborate the German killing of Jews during the World War II. Persecution of the Jews on the basis of being who they are was not just. The Jews lived in terrifying and horrible circumstances that hard to come to terms to with, in the concentration camps. Hard labor and unjustified murders were committed in the camps on a daily basis.
So extreme are the injustices that some characters, end up committing suicide to avoid the suffering that would lead to probable death in the long run.

Milton’s On The Late Massacre in Piedmont

The Lord is called upon by Milton to avenge the souls of the dead, victims of the massacre. Some of the victims are innocent people who had done nothing but service to the Lord. Victimized are a mother and her infant.
Falling or fallen victims have nobody to turn to but the Lord
Because it creates a world in which victimized individuals bear the burden of a grudge or the burden of trauma, killing does not carry any morals. Killing for fun as has been exhibited in Spielegeman’s Maus or Milton’s sonnet only threaten human existence and productivity. Great injustice is meted out when a child who can hardly understand the reasons for human conflict fall victim to atrocities. Killing infants does not just take away life from the infant, but rather halts the social development of a society.

Perception

Milton’s On The Late Massacre in Piedmont

The illusion is created by Milton in his sonnet when he is voicing out his grievances. By calling out to the Lord, one is made to perceive that he is taking a Lord he can see. When he is voicing out his complaints, a perception that they are locked in a conversation with the Lord develops. Moreover, the reader illusions that they both are in the massacre field in which he is showing Lord the atrocities that have been committed.
Making reference to the victimized mother and her infant creates an impression about their innocence. It also portrays the murderers as cruel and without remorse.

Hemingway’s Indian Camp

The pregnant lady who has been trying to deliver her baby for two days and the man who severely cut his leg three days prior to Vick’s dad’s visit create an illusion of helplessness. The Indians are perceived as isolated and helpless by the reader. They cannot solve their own problems and rely on the intervention of Nick’s dad for solutions to their medical problems
The doctor is also seen as an individual with empathy as he places the Indians before himself and serve to help.
Development of the story depends on the perceptions and understanding of the story by the reader.

Use of Symbolism

Maus by Spiegelman

Spiegelman’s describes his characters as animals in an attempt to draw the picture of the holocaust. Whilst the Jews have depicted as mice, the Germans are portrayed as the cats. The symbolism brings in the element of the cat’s superiority over mice and their bullying and hunting of mice. During the holocaust, the Jews live in fear are hunted down by Germans to be killed, as in the cat-mouse game. Portraying the Jews as mice represents the helplessness status in which they were against the Germans.
In the literary piece, Americans are portrayed as dogs, the born enemy of cats. Dogs always have an edge of superiority over cats and so is the picture of American superiority over Germans. Americans lead the Allied forces that save the Jews from the tribulations that were being meted against them in the concentration camps by the Germans.
The Polish are depicted as pigs that cannot be harmed by the cats but can do nothing to stop the cats’ hunting game. Their little reaction or no reaction when the Germans come to collect the Jews from their country for imprisonment is a characteristic of pigs.

Indian Camp

Western Medicine is used in Hemingway’s Indian Camp to make reference to European Medical practices that are considered superior to the Indians’. Nick’s father called into the Indian Camp to offer his medical knowledge, bears the symbolism of the Western Medicine.
Nick’s dad status of medical expertise is used to create an impersonal attitude in the Indian Camp
Symbolism is aimed at realizing the relevance of other situations in a literary piece and achieving clarity for various aspects of literary development.

Conclusion

Literary writers have different ways of reaching out to and connecting with their audience/ readers. The means may be aimed at creating feelings of empathy in the reader or creation of avid pictures in the minds of the reader to make them live the moments and actions of the piece of writing. For instance, Maus through symbolism and use of animated characters, makes the reader realize the state of helplessness among the Jews.
