The novel starts when Charlie is daydreaming in the classroom. He is observant and distracted at the same time because of what is happening. He is immediately summoned to the principal’s office, and he is informed of his suspension with immediate effect. This suspension to him comes because he had assaulted his science teacher. We are told that the science teacher Mr. Carlson had humiliated him publicly after he had answered a question wrongly on the board, and following pestering Charlie, he used a pipe from Charlie’s back pocket to beat him up on the head. By the time Charlie goes into the principal’s office, he had received a mental evaluation from the professional of mental health in school to determine his liability and causation, and this time he was going to receive his results. “Why did you do it, Charlie?” the principal asked him, and “were you trying to kill him?” the principal continued. After the news of his suspension he leaves the principal’s office, he goes to his locker opens it and he put his padlock in his shirt, takes a gun out and the remaining content in the locker he sets it ablaze. Charlie goes back to the class, executes the teacher, and takes charge of the students. Also, he closes the windows, locks the doors, and shows authority; he sits on the teacher’s desk. He prohibits students from either screaming, crying, or even leaving the class. The school started evacuating because the fire from the locker was growing to become huge; any teacher who tried peek in the class where Charlie was to know why students are not evacuating would execute them. The actions shown by Charlie show how the pressure on the students makes them do unexpected and causes conflicts at school.
The setting of the story is in Charlie’s high school; to be specific, it is in a classroom where Mrs. Underwood is teaching algebra, where she writes a=16 and asks Miss Cross, “Tell us about what that equation means if you please.” It is in this classroom where Charlie is when the story begins, and it is here Charlie ends up as the setting starts to climax. The variability of the set comes up by recalling the memories of his adolescence, and the development of Charlie’s character is created. Charlie is in the classroom physically with his classmates and teachers, but he is mental with his mom at home, camping with his dad, on a university campus with his best friend, and he does not realize his outbreak of his psychotic. This makes the reader reflect in thoughts and later through verbal stories in the climax of the setting. Also, we experience life when Charlie gives his classmates a brief moment to tell about their personal stories that are different from Charlie’s. At the end of the setting, Charlie is writing from a mental hospital after getting a trial for murder as well as other felonies he had committed at school. From this setting, we realize that no one is above the law regardless of their health status. One will face the law’s arms accordingly, and crime does not pay; somewhat, it ruins life.
The theme of the novel is difficult to detect because the majority of the text is within processes from the thoughts. Buchman shows all these ranges of persons who are mentally ill as a testament to a scenario that is worst when people do not look for treatment for these symptoms. For instance, Charlie was bullied several times and abused by his peers when he was growing up until he suffered from paranoia. This made him become aggressive and not to be remorseful for what he does during the climax of the scene.
Although students pass through a hard time learning, they are not supposed to overreact to issues like Charlie overreacting to everything. Through overreaction, these activities happen; Charlie assaults the teacher; he goes further to cause chaos in school by shouting out what leads to the death of teachers.
