Stealing someone else’s ideas or work is fraud whether they have an idea of whatever you are doing or not it is still not right (Gillian, 2017, May 18). This is same as stealing another person’s knowledge whether directly or indirectly. Many times plagiarism is done intentionally or by will and this automatically becomes an offense just like theft. Appreciating and acknowledging another person’s work is a good idea but you do not have to take negative advantage of that, just appreciate and let him or her teach you on how they made it that far, it would be more easier and beneficial to both parties. My goal in this paper is to bring out the meaning of plagiarism and ways to consequently avoid it.
To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into five sections which critically explains what a person can do in order to avoid this act. This five important acts to take are as follows; By understanding what plagiarism is, properly quote and paraphrase, properly cite sources, checking your work for possible plagiarism and finally doing more practice for perfection. I will end my paper by a second section that includes an appendix that contains the reference of what I examined above.
The ways of dealing with plagiarism are as follows:
Understanding plagiarism.
As stated above plagiarism is a way of stealing another person’s ideas or knowledge then trying to express them like it is your own. However, for you to become have this trait or manner you might have taken so many different forms maybe through text, media like the computer code, graphs, illustrations, and many more examples.
The moment you get to understand the true meaning of plagiarism and its negative consequences then you will be able to understand and appreciate other people’s work and learn on the benefits of having your own knowledge print, this is maybe for prestige or pride in the final work. The moment one time you have your genuine work done then get some form of appreciation, then you will get to know the goodness of your doing and expressing your work genuinely.
Properly quote and paraphrase.
Generally, researching and using outside evidences while tackling academic writing is basically important, but the point is this, these sources must be used in the right way, not a matter of copy and paste. You are therefore allowed to include information from any other source or sources but through proper quoting and paraphrasing.
For you to have the quoting and paraphrasing properly used, you have to understand how paraphrasing is done, and everything is going to be simple and easily applicable.
Properly cite sources.
As seen in the step explained above, you are allowed to quote and paraphrase from any outside source. But the information has to be cited within the paper, using in-text citations and also providing a different reference list. You are not supposed to provide sources that are not irrelevant. Therefore you are required to cite within your paper page and also reference list page.
Check your work for possible plagiarism.
Before you consider your work done, you should ensure that you check through your work properly to ensure that you have used outside sources as required. Practice.
As a good student, or for you to be a good student you have to do more practice for perfection. The more you practice the better you grow, therefore, for you to avoid or stop plagiarism if at all you were used to, you have to do more practice on basics like citation and paraphrasing and with the time you will realize it is so simple to deal with.
